A European Championship bronze, an American record, and an Ironman World Championship qualification
The weekend in short: On athletes showed convincing performances across multiple sports.
Zurich, Switzerland, March 6, 2023 - Be it Athletics or Triathlon, On athletes had a successful weekend that included some “firsts”.
Raharolahy wins On’s first-ever European Indoor Championship medal
France’s Agnes Raharolahy came from behind to take the 800m bronze at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul. Raharolahy ran a courageous race in the top group of runners and finally wrestled the spot on the podium from Swiss Audrey Werra and Spaniard Lorea Ibarzabal on the final meters of the race. She won bronze in 2:00.85, two hundredths ahead of Ibarzabal.
But also the other On athletes on start logged good performances. Next to Raharolahy, six other athletes made it to their respective finals.
Charles Grethen from Luxembourg claimed fifth place in the men’s 3000m event, and German sprinter Alexandra Burghardt finished seventh in the 60-meter dash. Italy’s Sinta Vissa was ninth in the 1500m ranking, Marta Garcia of Spain claimed position ten in the women’s 3000m race, and Ireland’s Like McCann was 10th in the men’s 1500m event. Sadly, an on-form George Mills fell only 30 seconds into the race and finished his race in 11th with a broken hand.
Monson breaks American 10,000 m record at SoundRunning TEN, presented by On
On Saturday night, an in-form Alicia Monson shattered the American 10,000m record by 9.35 seconds at The TEN Sound Running race in San Juan Capistrano, California. Monson finished in 30:03.82, which significantly improved the record set by Molly Huddle at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Also on start were fellow On Athletics Club athletes Joe Klecker and Jonas Raess and On athlete Ben Flanagan, who finished second, fifth, and twelfth, respectively. Klecker finished in 27:07.57, which meets the World Athletics Championship qualifying standards for Budapest 2023. Raess's time of 27:26.40 is the second-fastest time ever run by a Swiss athlete on this distance, and only three Europeans were faster than his last year.
Fenella Langridge takes to the podium at Ironman South Africa
On athlete Fenella Langridge finished a strong second at Ironman South Africa and obtained one of the direct qualification spots for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, later this year. The Brit was in the lead after a weather-shortened swim but fell back to a delay of +7:35 after the bike portion. She moved up to the second spot in the run and held on to the position at the finish line, which she crossed after 8 hours, 13 minutes, and 17 seconds, roughly eleven minutes behind the winner.
Meanwhile, the World Triathlon Championship Series season kicked off in Dubai, and On athletes showed convincing performances here. On the women’s side, Italian Verena Steinhauser claimed a Top Ten position in ninth. New addition Lisa Tertsch from Germany debuted with rank 10 in her first competition as an On athlete. At the same time, Switzerland’s Max Studer claimed position 9 in the men’s race.
