All Eyes on Chamonix for the 2024 Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc
17 On Trail Athletes are heading to Chamonix to compete in the prestigious UTMB World Series Final Races
Chamonix, France, August 25, 2024 - The pinnacle of the trail running calendar has arrived as Chamonix prepares to host the 2024 UTMB World Series Final. Thousands of elite runners and passionate amateurs will descend upon the iconic mountain town to tackle the trails around the infamous Mont Blanc. Amongst them are 17 On athletes who will compete across five of the eight races scheduled throughout the week (26th August - 1st of September).
David Kilgore, Trail Athlete Manager for On, looked ahead to the week in Chamonix:
“UTMB is the trail moment of the year, and we’re excited to have more On athletes than ever racing in Chamonix this year. We strengthened our team at the beginning of the year and have seen incredible results in the lead-up to this iconic moment. Now, we’re eager to hit the trails, cheer on our athletes, and support them as they chase their goals in these legendary races.”
Athletes to Watch
The action kicks off on Monday, August 26th, with Kirra Balamanno, who will be taking on the La Petite Trotte À Léon (PTL). In a team race, participants will be taken on a grand tour of Mount Blanc, covering a total distance of 300km and 25000m positive elevation. The athletes will set off from Chamonix on Monday, August 26th at 08:00 local time and, with a time limit of 151 hours to complete the course, are expected to return on Friday, August 30th.
At 23:50 on that same Monday, Simon Gosselin will be at the start line for what is often considered the most technical of the eight races: The TDS (Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie). The TDS links the Aosta Valley to the Savoie, and runners will cover 148km with 9300m of positive elevation.
On Thursday, August 29th, David Norris, Sam Lewis, and Sammy Rotich will leave Orsières to complete the OCC (Orsières —Champex—Chamonix). The 55 km route with 3425m of positive elevation is often dubbed the Little Swiss Sister. The course takes runners from Orsières in Switzerland through the heart of the Swiss Valley before crossing into France and finishing under the infamous arch in Chamonix.
A day later, across the Italian border in Courmayeur, Antoine Charvolin, Megan Mackenzie, and Paul Mathou will set off at 09:00 for the CCC (Courmayeur - Champex - Chamonix). Nicknamed the “little sister of UTMB,” the race tackles the second half of the classic UTMB, taking runners through the exceptional landscape of Italy, Switzerland, and ultimately to Chamonix.
As the CCC race progresses, attention will shift to the heart of Chamonix, where the flagship UTMB race will commence at 18:00 on Friday. Nine On athletes - Alyssa Clark, Arthur Joyeux-Bouillon, Claudia Tremps, David Hauss, Geneviève Asselin-Demers, Genevieve Harrison, Jeff Mogavero, Gregoire Crumer , and Katarzyna Solinska - will be amongst the 2300 runners taking on this ultimate trail race. A grueling 171km race with 10,000m of elevation gain, circumnaviating Mount Blanc and passing through France, Italy and Switzerland.
