GLASGOW, United Kingdom, March 4, 2024 - The On Athletic Club (OAC) scripted a historic weekend in Glasgow as Geordie Beamish from New Zealand and his teammate Yared Nuguse from the USA etched their names in the global athletics spotlight, clinching gold and silver respectively at the Indoor World Championships.
Beamish produced an extraordinary finish that had him advance from the fifth position to victory on the home straight in the men’s 1500m race. Even though the New Zealander had focussed on the longer 3000m steeplechase distance lately, Beamish upset the American duo of Cole Hocker and Hobbs Kessler with a home straight sprint down lane three and won the race in a new personal best of 3:36.54.
Fellow On athletes Mario Garcia Romo and Kieran Lumb finished the same race in positions eleven (3:40.48) and thirteen (3:41.37), respectively.
The medal joy had already started the previous day when Yared Nuguse secured the silver medal in the men’s 3000m race, outpaced only by the reigning World Champion, Josh Kerr. Nuguse exhibited tremendous grit, holding off challenges from Olympic Champion Salomon Barega, and concluded the race with a season-best time of 7:43.59.
OAC Coach Dathan Ritzenhein was overjoyed with his team’s performance in Scotland. “I think I’ve lost my mind, what an amazing success story! It’s incredible how far Geordie has come, from two broken legs to World Champion. The silver is a great first medal for Yared. He is going to learn so much for Paris from that.”
In addition to the two medals in the men’s races, Marta Garcia (ESP) and Josette Andrews (USA) finished 10th and 11th in the women’s 3000m final. Garcia clocked a time of 8:40.34, while Andrews posted a season-best of 8:41.93.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 1500m final, On athletes Reveé Walcott-Nolan (GBR), Agathe Guillemot (FRA), and Maia Ramsden (NZL) claimed ranks six (4:04.60), seven (4:04.94), and ten (4:06.88) respectively.
The triumphs in Glasgow mark a defining chapter in the OAC's journey as the athletes continue to elevate their performances on the global stage. With Geordie Beamish's surprising gold and Yared Nuguse's silver, On Athletic Club has firmly set the stage for even greater successes later in the season.
