Flavio Cobolli wins maiden ATP Tour Title in Bucharest
After seven match points, the Italian youngster claimed his first-ever ATP Tour Title
BUCHAREST, Romania, April 6, 2025 - 22-year-old Italian Flavio Cobolli has won his maiden ATP Tour title at the Tiriac Open in Bucharest, Romania. After seven championship points, Cobolli defeated Sebastian Baez (ARG) 6:4, 6:4 to lift his first tour-level title.
Cobolli arrived in Romania on an eight-match losing streak and dropped his first set during his round of 16 match against Richard Gasquet. Following that match, Cobolli didn’t drop another set and on his way to the final, beating F. Misolic (AUS) 7:6, 6:4 and D. Dzumhur (BIH) 6:3, 6:0 to set up a final with the number one seed Sebastian Baez.
The young Italian broked Baez’s serve twice to take the first set. In the second set, Cobolli increased his aggressiveness, particularly on the forehand, to take a double-break lead at 5:2. Closing out the match seemed to prove the hardest for the Italian today, as he let three championship points slip on his on serve at 5:2. He let three more slip on return at 5:3 but there was no stopping Cobolli from taking home his maiden title. A classy lob on the seventh championship point sealed the title for Cobolli.
Cobolli reflected on achieving his childhood dream following his win:
“I feel great. I feel happy. It’s a big dream come true for my career. I always dreamed of winning an ATP tournament and it has happened today. I’m really happy to be here and have achieved my best result ever. I came from a tough moment. I had not won a match, before this tournament this year, and I won the tournament. So I’m really happy about it."
With his win in Romania, Cobolli will rise nine spots in the ranking on Monday, taking him to No. 36 in the world - just six places shy of his career high, achieved in September of 2024. He is the fifth first-time champion on the ATP Tour this season, joining fellow On athlete Joao Fonseca, amongst others.
