Fourth-place finish for Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui in the Olympic Steeplechase Final
The Tunisian national proves himself to be one of the best steeplechasers in the world.
Paris, France, August 7, 2024 - In the last athletics event of the night, the men's 3000m steeplechase final delivered a thrilling spectacle. On athlete Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui, representing Tunisia, finished in fourth place, setting a new national record of 8:07.73.
Jhinaoui started the race towards the back of the pack as the Ethiopian runners took an early lead. However, with two laps remaining, he began to advance, positioning himself in the middle of the leading group. As the pace accelerated during the final lap, Jhinaoui's hopes of a podium finish slipped away with Soufiane El Bakkali (MOR), Kenneth Rooks (USA), and Abraham Kibiwot (KEN) pulling ahead in the final stretch.
Despite missing out on an Olympic medal, Jhinaoui's fourth-place finish represents a remarkable achievement. Just two years ago, he was eliminated in the heats of the World Championships. His progress was evident last year in Budapest, where he made it to the final and finished 13th. Today's performance solidifies his status as one of the top steeplechasers in the world.
Reflecting on Jhinaoui’s performance, his coach, Guiseppe Giambrone, expressed his satisfaction:
“I’m very happy for Amin. He has improved every year - step by step - and now has shown that he belongs among the best in the world. He’s a good athlete and a great human being. Today we came very close to a medal, hopefully next time he'll win one but every year he is getting better."
