Hellen Obiri Shatters Course Record to Claim Second New York Victory, Solidifying Legacy As A Marathon Force
Sub-2:20 Triumph Marks Kenyan Star's Fifth World Marathon Major Title

New York, United States, November 2, 2025 – Hellen Obiri has once again delivered a commanding, historic performance on the streets of the five boroughs, claiming her second career victory in the marathon of New York. The two-time Boston champion crossed the finish line in a blistering 02:19:51, demolishing the existing course record and displaying the signature tactical brilliance and closing speed that propelled her to victory here in 2023.
This triumph adds a fifth World Marathon Major title to the Kenyan star’s unparalleled accolades, which include two Olympic silver medals and multiple World Championships.
Obiri faced one of the most formidable elite fields in recent history, including reigning champion Sheila Chepkirui, fellow former champion Sharon Lokedi, who had beaten Obiri in Boston earlier this year, and the multi-talented Sifan Hassan, who was attempting a rare major marathon double. A lead group of five, including Hassan, Chepkirui, Obiri, Lokedi, and O'Keefe, formed at the halfway point, with Hassan fading away towards the 25km mark. O'Keefe was dropped by Chepkirui, Lokedi, and Obiri at the 26-kilometer mark, and would remain together until kilometer 40 when Chepkirui was dropped by Obiri and Lokedi.
Obiri, known for her patience and explosive finish, waited for the pivotal late stages on the hills of Central Park before pulling away from Lokedi as the 42-kilometer mark ticked on the hit, unleashing her unparalleled track speed to secure the victory.
Reflecting on her victory, Obiri said:
“New York was my first marathon, and to be able to come back and win it again is amazing. It's hard to put into words how I feel right now, but I’m so thankful for the support I’ve received from the team, Laura, Dathan, and Kelsey, as well as my family and all the fans cheering me on today. It’s just amazing.”
Laura Thweatt, who joined the OAC Coaching staff earlier this year with the specific role to support the road runners of the team, spoke on her experience seeing Obiri take the victory today:
“Witnessing Hellen's performance today was electrifying. While she came into this race already a champion, this was my first marathon coaching her, and being able to work with her through this training block from start to finish has been incredibly rewarding. She is simply exceptional. Her ability to absorb experience, put in the relentless work, and now secure this second New York title and a new course record is truly inspiring. I'm honored to be a part of her journey.”
Klecker finishes 3rd American in Marathon Debut
Joe Klecker (USA) celebrated his marathon debut in New York, finishing in 10th place overall and as the third-fastest American, crossing the finish line in 2:10:37.

Laura Thweatt, who worked closely with Klecker throughout his preparation, spoke after his finish:
“I’m very proud of Joe and how he carried himself today. A marathon is always tough, and the first one in particular. It’s been a big pleasure working with him through his first marathon training block ,and he’s learnt and grown a lot. I’m so excited to continue working with him and see what he can bring to the marathon in his next attempts.”
