Zurich, Switzerland, May 8, 2023 - Tennis World No. 1 Iga Świątek and Triathlon Olympic Champion Kristian Blummenfelt shared the same fate last weekend: both came in second in their respective competitions: the Mutua Madrid Open and the PTO European Open in Ibiza.
Mutua Madrid Open
Tennis World No. 1 Iga Świątek made it to the final of her second tournament in On but took a loss to World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. The tough lasted 2 hours and 26 minutes, but in the end, Świątek had to concede defeat 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. It has been the first time Sabalenka has beaten Świątek on clay, but the Polish World No. 1 did not have many regrets after the match.
PTO European Open, Ibiza
Also, in Ibiza, On athlete Kristian Blummenfelt had to let one person pass in the PTO European Open. In what was his first competition in On, Blummenfelt finished in 3:14:13 and only had to concede defeat to Max Neumann from Australia. But also for Blummenfelt, the positives outweighed the negatives, especially as the Norwegian had been able to win the much-publicized duel of all the Olympic champions since 2008 – Jan Frodeno (GER), Alistair Brownlee (GBR) and himself. Magnus Ditlev (DEN) completed the podium in third, with Frodeno and Brownlee fourth and sixth, respectively, as they returned to action from injury. Fellow On athletes Tom Bishop (3:19:35) and Frederic Funk (3:25:06) were twelfth and nineteenth, respectively.
On the women’s side, Canadian On athlete Paula Findlay finished just next to the podium in fifth (3:43:34), and Fenella Langridge ended her day on rank 15 (3:50:41).
ITU Long Distance World Championships, Ibiza
Ibiza also hosted the ITU Long Distance World Championships the following Sunday, and On athletes Camille Pedersen, Josh Amberger, and Jesper Svensson were in action. Pedersen finished just next to the podium in fourth (06:08:57). Teammate Josh Amberger was in the lead after the swim portion but ended up in a fifth position in a final time of 05:21:33. Jesper Svensson finished 15h (05:31:12),
Trail Running
On Trail runner Megan Mackenzie claimed third place at what is, without doubt, one of the hardest ultra trail races in the world. She completed the Transvulcania with its length of 75 kilometers and an elevation gain of 4,735 meters, and an elevation loss of 4,405 meters in a total time of 09:28:06.
American teammate Jeff Mogavero finished seventh and completed the course in a total time of 07:32:55, half an hour behind winner and fellow American Dakota Jones.
Meanwhile, Marion Delespierre and running partner Audrey Tanguy claimed the win at One&1 in the Maritime Alpes and Katarzyna Solinska claimed yet another win for Team On at UltraBies Biegi Gorski in Poland.
