Iga Świątek ends the season in style with WTA Finals victory in Cancun

Cancun, Mexico, November 6, 2023 - All is well that ends well for On athlete Iga Świątek. After a roller-coaster season that saw her win the French Open and a total of six titles but also crashing out of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and conceding her World No. 1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka, the 22-year-old ended 2023 on the highest note possible. 

An emphatic 6-0, 6-1 victory over American Jessica Pegula gave Świątek her latest trophy, the 17th of her career, and ensures that she will take back the World No. 1 ranking for the end of the year.

Facing off against the best of the best in Cancun, an in-form Świątek just lost just 20 games and did not lose a single set in Cancun, which makes this the most dominant run to the WTA Finals title since the round-robin format was reintroduced in 2003. She posted straight-set victories over Australian Open champion Sabalenka, US Open champion Coco Gauff, and Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.

In the final against World No. 5, she did not give Pegula any angles of attack. ​ Świątek dominated the match with baseline aggression, heavy strokes, speed and athleticism, and ruthlessly using her chances. She finally sealed her championship win in only 59 minutes.
