Iga Świątek storms to tour-leading 5th title of the year in Beijing
The Polish World No. 2 defeated Liudmilla Samsonova to take her 16th career title in the Chinese capital.
Zurich, Switzerland, October 9, 2023 - On athlete Iga Świątek ended a perfect week by lifting her fifth trophy of the year at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. In what was Świątek’s third WTA 1000 final of the season and seventh final of the year, she defeated Liudmilla Samsonova 6-2, 6-2.
Overall, the 22-year-old only lost one set in the entire tournament (to France’s Caroline Garcia) and secured straight-set wins over Sara Sorribes-Tormo, Varvara Gracheva, Magda Linette, and Coco Gauff.
After her French Open win, the WTA 1000 title in Beijing was the second biggest of Świątek’s season and joined 2023 trophies from Doha, Stuttgart, and Warsaw. With the victory, World No. 2 Świątek significantly closes the gap between her and No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on both the WTA rankings and the year-to-date standings (the race to the WTA Finals in Cancun, which take place at the end of the month).
