Iga Swiatek wins first Olympic Tennis Medal for Poland
Iga Swiatek dominates the match against Schmiedlová to claim Olympic Bronze
Paris, France, August 2, 2024 — Iga Swiatek took to the court in Paris and successfully secured her first Olympic medal, defeating Anna Karolína Schmiedlová 6:2, 6:1, etching her name into Polish sporting history. Her bronze medal marks the first-ever Olympic Tennis medal for Poland.
On her way to the bronze medal match, Swiatek beat Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU) 6:2, 7:5, Dianne Parry (FRA) 6:1, 6:1, Xiyu Wang (CHI) 6: 3, 6:4, Daniel Collins (USA) 6:1, 2:6, 4:1. In the semi-final Qinwen Zhen of China proved too strong for the polish player, and Iga's dream of a Gold Medal came to a halt as she lost 2:6, 5:7.
A day after her defeat, Swiatek completely dominated the bronze medal match, proving why she is the world number one and giving Schiedlova little chance to make a mark. In just 59 minutes, Swiatek had decided the match in favor of Poland, winning the first set 6:2 and the second 6:1.
Overcome by emotion after her win, Swiatek said:
I’m proud of myself, even if my ultimate dream is to win gold. I’m happy to be the first tennis player from Poland to become the Olympic medalist, despite the huge and unimaginable pressure around this event. I need to remind myself how challenging it was now and it makes this achievement even more significant.
Feliciano Robayna, Head of Athlete Management for Tennis at On, said after Swiatek's historic win:
“We dreamt together with Iga and are proud to have supported her as she wrote her name into Olympic and Polish history. We know Iga came here for more, but watching her compete, she has once again shown why she is one of the best players in the world, but more importantly the human she is. A human we couldn’t be prouder to have as part of the On athlete team and to whom we look forward to celebrating this historic achievement with.”
36 years after her father competed for Poland in the rowing competition, the Swiatek family now has an Olympic Medal to its name.
