João Fonseca Triumphs in Basel, Becomes Third Youngest ATP 500 Champion
The 19-year-old Brazilian defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final, securing a new career-high ranking of World No. 28.
Basel, Switzerland, October 27, 2025 - João Fonseca has won his first ATP 500 title at the Swiss Indoors Basel, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 in the final. The victory makes the 19-year-old Brazilian the third youngest ATP 500 champion since the series began in 1990, marking another milestone in his meteoric rise on the professional tour.
Fonseca showcased immense power, dictating the game from the baseline and hitting an impressive 15 winners in the opening set. He secured an early 3-0 lead before Davidovich Fokina closed the gap to 3-2. Fonseca retook control, breaking again to clinch the first set in 40 minutes. The Brazilian secured an immediate break to start the second set. From there, both players held serve until Fonseca successfully served out the match to claim his maiden ATP 500 title.
Fonseca's Basel triumph caps off a stunning year of success. In January, he lifted his second Challenger title and qualified for the Australian Open, making his major debut. He broke into the Top 100 at the end of January, before lifting his first tour-level title at the Argentina Open, becoming the youngest Brazilian to win an ATP title in the Open Era. His strong season continued as he reached the third round at Wimbledon and broke into the Top 50 in July.
Following his win in Basel, Fonseca will rise to a career-high ranking of World No. 28 in the rankings, becoming the fifth-highest-ranked Brazilian in history.
With his new ranking, Fonseca will head to the Paris Masters 1000 event, where he is set for a rematch against Denis Shapovalov (CAN)—whom he defeated in the Basel quarter-finals when the Canadian retired at a score of 3-6, 6-3, 4-1.
