Martin Schulz wins Bronze in the PT5 Paratriathlon Competition

After two gold medals, Schulz celebrates his third Paralympic medal in Paris

Paris, France, September 2, 2024 - Despite a delay due to the bad water conditions of the Seine, there was no stopping Martin Schulz (GER) from adding another coveted Para-triathlon medal in the PT5 category to his already elaborate medal case.

Following 750m of swimming, 20km on the bike, and a 5km run in 59:19 minutes, Schulz found himself crossing the finish line, overcome by emotion as he became the third man, behind Brazilian triathlete Ronan Cordeiro and American champion Chris Hammer, to cross the finish line.

Schulz reached the bank of the Seine after 11:27, which put him in a good position as he passed transition zone 1 in 11th place. After 8.9km on the bike, Schulz had worked his way forward and found himself in fifth place, with his main competition, Cordeiro, leading the way. As the kilometer mark hit 18.5km, Schulz led the race and headed into the final transition ahead of the field. On the run, the podium battle intensified between Hammer, Cordeiro, and Schulz, with Hammer ultimately pulling away from the Brazilian and German athletes to crown himself champion. Cordeiro and Schulz fought it out for the Silver and Bronze medal in a final sprint, with Cordeiro beating Schulz by 10 seconds to settle the medal order.

Following the race, Schulz was overcome by emotion as he shared this triumph with his family and son Emil:

“The race wasn’t perfect. So finishing with a medal is amazing. The fact that I didn't get out of the water so well was really tough for me. I gave it everything I had on the bike course. And it was really good that I got off the bike first. But it wasn't the perfect race today and it really was a battle from start to finish. And I'm all the happier that I was able to win a medal. My first thoughts were about my wife and son and I simply couldn’t be happier.”

Triathlon Athlete Manager at On, Maria Ortega, shared her thoughts after watching the race:

“A third Paralympic Medal is something that Martin, his family and we are all super proud of. Winning a third medal might sound easy, but it never is. Seeing how hard he has worked on the road to Paris, especially juggling being a professional athlete with being a new parent is amazing and certainly added a new challenge after Rio and Tokyo.”

For Martin Schulz, this marked his fourth Paralympic Games and third competing as a triathlete. Following his debut in swimming in London in 2012, Schulz transitioned to triathlon, successfully securing the Paralympic title in 2016 and 2021.
