10 May 2024
ZURICH, Switzerland, May 10, 2024—It was a successful weekend for On Athletes worldwide, with titles in the US, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany, along with plenty of new PBs on the track and road.
No Stopping Findlay in St. George
During the Ironman St. George, which doubled up as the North American Championship, Paula Findlay (CAN) put on a triathlon masterclass, taking home the win in a time of 4:09.27. Exiting the water with the lead pack, Findlay broke away on the bike and built up a four-minute lead. Transitioning into the run, she held onto that lead and cruised to the win, finishing two minutes clear of Ellie Salthouse (AUS) and Jackie Hering (USA).
Speaking on the race she said: “It was nice to run without fear, I still pushed hard, but it wasn’t like I was on the redline and it meant I could enjoy the run a little bit. This course is so challenging, with so much elevation gain, but the crowd support is great.”
New Women’s Record on Menorca
During the Cami de Cavallas Menorca 80km on Saturday, Spanish trail runner Claudia Tremps secured gold in the women’s race. The route took runners along the southern coast of Menorca Island, with Tremps completing the 85km with 1350m of elevation in a new women’s record time of 10:46.38. A dominant performance by Tremps, she held a three-hour advantage over second-place finisher Chiara Pinarel and almost five hours ahead of the third female finisher.
National Championship Success
At the Swiss Athletics Championships, Dominic Lobalu secured his first outdoor Swiss title, winning the 10k race in Interlaken in 27:36.29. A new personal PB and the first time a runner has dipped under 28 minutes at a Swiss Championship, it is Lobalu’s second Swiss Championship title this year, after winning the indoor 3000m title earlier in February.
Due to a lack of entrants, the Swiss Championship title was not handed out in the female category. Nevertheless, On athlete Helen Bekele won the race in a new PB time of 33:41.69.
At the German national championships, Filimon Abraham also secured the national 10k in a time of 27:59.98.
In Geneva, Tadese Abraham (SUI) took home the win across the half-marathon distance. Crossing the finish line in a time of 01:02.15, 24 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Kelvin Kibet.
On Athletes succeed at unusual distances in Pliezhausen
Four On athletes took to the start lines at the Pliezhausen meet, known for its unusual distances. Steeplechase specialist Gesa Krause (GER) took home two medals from the meet. The first was in the 1000m race, where she finished second with a new PB of 2:37.96. She then went on to take home gold in the 2000m steeple chase distance, with a meet record and time of 6:13.15.
In the same races, Lilly Nägeli (SUI) placed 10th in the 1000m distance with a new personal best time of 2:44.39, and Olivia Gürth (GER) took home bronze in the 2000m steeple chase race, crossing the finish line in 6:17.36. In the 600m race, Swedish runner Maria Freij came 11th.
