Nuguse and Garcia-Romo go 5-6 in the 1,500m
OAC’s Yared Nuguse and Mario Garcia-Romo claimed ranks five and sixth in their signature 1500m race in Budapest.
Budapest, Hungary, August 24, 2023 - On Athletic Club members continue to bring in good results on the world stage in Budapest. With American Yared Nuguse and Spaniard Mario Garcia-Romo, the 1500m finals featured two On athletes. Both put in solid efforts to come home in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
In a race that started with a high pace and ended with an upset of big favorite Jacob Ingebrigtsen, Nuguse and Garcia-Romo held good positions in the middle of the field at the beginning of the race. Around the 800m mark, Nuguse moved up into third in an effort to control Ingebrigtsen's moves as the Norwegian took the initiative and led the pack. Meanwhile, Mario Garcia-Romo was running with a different strategy and moved to the back of the field to bide his time.
Going into the final lap, the pace increased further, and Nuguse had to let go of the top athletes. With 300 meters to go, he had dropped into sixth position while Garcia-Romo was moving up on the outside. As the sprint for the gold medal unfolded in the front, the American and the Spaniard found each other in the field of competitors and stormed to the finish line side by side, resulting in positions five and six in 3:30.25 and 3:30.26, respectively.
