On Athletes Secure Key Victories and Qualifying Spots

Nuguse and Sodaro lead the charge with crucial performances, while Ezekiel and Hollingsworth break national records.

Zurich, Switzerland, August 18, 2025 - This past weekend was a pivotal one for On athletes, who achieved major milestones across various competitions. On the track, Yared Nuguse took a significant step toward securing a spot at the World Championships in Tokyo. Meanwhile, triathlete Chelsea Sodaro earned a critical qualifying spot for the Ironman World Championships in Kona.

Yared Nuguse is one step closer to Tokyo

At the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland, Yared Nuguse (USA) came one step closer to qualifying for the world championships in Tokyo by winning the 1500m in 3:33.19 and collecting the points he needs to qualify for the Diamond League final in Zurich next week. With his win, Nuguse moves into 4th in the Diamond League standings, which all but guarantees him a spot in the final in Zurich. He will also run the Brussels Diamond League this week to gain even more points. Having failed to make Team USA and the US Championships earlier this month, Nuguse can now only secure his spot by winning the wild card at the Diamond League final in Zurich.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, new signing and rising star Nathaniel Ezekiel (NIG) put on a great display, clocking a new personal best and Nigerian record of 47.31, claiming second place and beating our 2019 bronze medallist Abderrahman Samba, who finished third.

Australia’s Claudia Hollingsworth delivered a fabulous performance in the non-Diamond league 800m competition. Finishing in fifth overall, Hollingsworth clocked a new PB and Australian record of 1:57.67.

Chelsea Sodaro is heading back to Kona

With the final qualifying spots on offer for the upcoming world championships in Kona, Chelsea Sodaro was at the start line of the Ironman Kalmar with one goal: To book her ticket to Kona.

Hannah Nunday (GBR) led out the swim with Sodaro close on her heels, in what she described as “maybe my best ever swim”. Despite making the move early on the bike to lead out the field, this had changed by the halfway mark with Marlene de Boer (NED) opening up a lead which she carried into T2. Sodaro came into T2 in third, six minutes behind de Boer and two behind second-place Katrine Græsbøll Christensen (DEN). Sodaro was not able to catch up with de Boer and Græsbøll Christensen on the run, crossing the finish line nearly 18 minutes after de Boer in third place, having achieved her one goal: validation for Kona.
