On athletes send national records tumbling at Millrose Games in New York
A fantastic performance by OAC athletes culminated in two world-leading times set by Alicia Monson and Yared Nuguse, seven new national records, and three OAC personal bests.
New York, USA, February 12, 2023 - Countless records have fallen over the past 114 editions of Millrose Games, and 2023 was no exception. In a fantastic culmination of training efforts, On Athletic's Club athletes sent national records tumbling left, right, and center at one of the world's premier indoor track meets.
Monson and Nuguse set World Leading Times
In the Millrose Game's signature event, the Rudin Wanamaker Mile, OAC's Yared Nuguse delivered a stellar performance in front of frenzied spectators. In the electric atmosphere at New York's The Armory Track, the 23-year-old just missed the world record but ran the second-fastest indoor mile in history and crushed Bernard Lagat's 15-year-old American record in 3:47.38. This record is Nuguse's second American record of the indoor season; two weeks ago in Boston, he broke the indoor 3,000m record in a staggering 7:28.24. Teammate Alicia Monson smashed Karissa Schweizer's American record by 65 hundredths and ran a world-leading 8:25.05 in the women's 3000m race.
On athletes push the envelope: National records and personal bests galore
Even though Australian Oliver Hoare could not defend his Wanamaker Mile title from last year, the 26-year-old will nevertheless be satisfied with a strong showing. He confirmed his Australian record time of 3:50.83 and claimed third place in the fiercely contested mile race. Mario Garcia Romo finished fifth and set a new Spanish record of 3:51.79.
On the women's side, the Wanamaker Mile was every bit as electric as the men's race, and Josette Andrews, who joined OAC only in January, took second place behind British world-class athlete Laura Muir. Andrews's teammate Sinta Vissa from Italy, claimed the sixth place and pulverized her own Italian record in 4:24.54.
Jonas Raess of Switzerland (7:35.24) and Geordie Beamish of New Zealand (7:36.22) also set national records in the 3000 m men's event.
In addition, three OAC athletes set new personal bests: Joe Klecker clocked a PB of 7:34.14 in the 3000-meter race, Hannah Steelman finished in 8:54.69 on the same distance, and OAC Europe's Luke McCann from Ireland claimed a new personal best of 3:53.55 on the mile.
“I thought last year's Millrose Games would be hard to top but amazingly, the team did it this year! It was a magical night. Seven national records and two victories in the biggest indoor meet of the year was just incredible. I couldn’t be more proud of the way the team competed. Last year they were the surprise of the meet, but this year they came in with expectations. They rose to meet those and showed just how great they are becoming", said On Athletics Club coach Dathan Ritzenhein.
