Season Openers and Key Races
On Athletes traveled around the world to take to the start lines of some of the key races and meets of the season.
ZURICH, Switzerland, May 13, 2024 - A busy weekend for On athletes, from running laps on the tracks in Doha and Karlsruhe to swimming, cycling, and running at the WTCS season opener in Yokohama.
Top 10 Finishes for Blumenfelt and Waugh in Yokohama
This weekend, nine On athletes took to the start line at the World Triathlon Championship Series race in Yokohama, Japan, hoping to kick off the race series with fast performances.
The men’s race was shaken up by multiple bike crashes, impacting some of the pre-race favorites, such as Bergere and Conix. Starting his race season in Yokohama, Blummenfelt had hoped for a different result. Despite a strong race, he had to settle for 10th place, 41 seconds behind Morgan Pearson (USA), who delivered a blistering running performance to win the title. Blummenfelt remained in the lead pack across the entire race but had to let any hopes of a podium finish go in the second lap of the run section as Paquet, Willian, and Pearson pushed ahead. In his WTCS debut, recently signed On athlete Hugo Milner ended his race in the 39th position after a strong run.
Leonie Periault (FRA) delivered an incredible performance on the women's side, stunning everyone to take home the title. On athlete, Kate Waugh (GB), was amongst the pre-race favorites and mingled among the front packs throughout the race. Waugh emerged among the front-pack of athletes as they transitioned from the water to the bike. Despite several mini breakaways over the laps, the front pack remained together for much of the bike section. Julie Derron (SUI) followed in a small chase pack but couldn’t quite make it up to the lead pack and soon fell back by over a minute. At the front, the lead pack, including Waugh, started their run over a minute ahead of the chase pack and was locked in a battle for third with Kasper. Waugh couldn’t quite hold on to the position as runners from the chase pack began to make their moves, resulting in a 10th-place finish in a time of 1:54.11. Derron finished less than 10 seconds behind her in 12th. Lisa Tertsch crossed the finish line in 14th place shortly after.
National Record and PBs at Dimond League Meet
Four On athletes traveled to the third stop of the 2024 Diamond League, with the meet taking place on the track in Doha, Qatar. In the 3000m steeple chase final, Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui (TUN) finished seventh in the rankings but managed to secure a new PB and National Record, crossing the line in 8:17.56. Kieran Lumb (CAN) and Robert Farken (DEU) took to the start line of the 1500m race, with Lumb coming away with a new PB and 8th place (3:34.41) and Farken coming in 12th in a time of 3:35.59. In the women’s 1500m race, British athlete Revee Walcott-Nolan crossed the finish line in 4:03.99, taking home the 7th spot.
13 On Athletes Race in Karlsruhe
During the Lange Lauf Nacht in Karlsruhe, Germany, 13 On athletes laced up their shoes, looking to put their training to the test as the outdoor season ramps up. Dominic Lobalu took home silver in the 1500m race, finishing just behind the first-place winner Jochem Vermeulen (BEL). Young Spanish athlete and OAC Europe Member Mohamed Attoui delivered a great performance, coming in 7th overall place in the same race in a time of 3:36.32. Noah Baltus (NED) finished 11th in a time of 3:37.91, and Florian Bremm (GER) rounded off the On runners, coming in at 3:37.73 and claiming 15th place. Olivia Gürth and Lilly Nägeli (SUI) both suited up for the 1500m women’s final, with Gürth finishing in 10th position in a time of 4:14.57, followed by Nägeli in 14th place with a time of 4:18.95.
Jolanda Kallabis (GER) competed in the U20 800m final, coming away with a bronze medal and a time of 2:06.69. In her first race since officially joining the On athlete team, Swiss athlete Valentina Rosamailia claimed the 5th sport in the 800m final, in a time of 2:02.49.
Cari Hughes of Great Britian was the only female athlete to line up for the 5000m race. In a great race, she pushed herself and came away with fourth place and a new PB, finishing the race in 15:21.47.
In the 3000m steeple chase final, Jacob Boutera of Norway also managed to secure a fourth place finish, finishing the race in a time of 8:22,94 and falling less than a second short of a podium finish.
