Sodaro Makes Waves with Top Six Finish at Ironman Kona

Chelsea Sodaro, the reigning champion, blazes through the marathon during the final stage of the Ironman World Championships, clinching a 6th-place finish overall

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, October 14, 2023 - Triathletes Chelsea Sodaro (USA) and Penny Slater (AUS) have achieved impressive top 15 placements at the 2023 Ironman World Championships, an event that witnessed the establishment of remarkable course records.

The 2023 Ironman World Championships unfolded as a breathtaking showcase of determination and endurance in Kona. Uniquely, this year's competition was solely contested by women, with the men's division already having crowned its World Champion in Nice, France, a month prior.

“I always tell my daughter we can do hard things, and that’s what I told myself today.”

Chelsea Sodaro, last year's Kona Ironman champion, entered the race with her sights firmly set on victory. Wearing Bib 1, she faced initial challenges during the swim and bike segments but hit her stride in the final leg – the marathon. With an astonishing pace and a marathon time of 2 hours, 53 minutes, and 2 seconds, Sodaro secured a well-deserved position within the top 6, graciously acknowledging this year's champion, Lucy Charles-Barclay.

After four previous second-place finishes in Kona, Charles-Barclay left no doubt this time, establishing a new course record with a remarkable finish time of 8 hours, 24 minutes, and 31 seconds, securing the elusive victory.

On the opposite side of the world, in Chengdu, China, On triathletes took their positions at the starting line for the World Triathlon Cup on Saturday, October 14th. Rostyslav Pevtsov (AZE) displayed remarkable determination, securing a well-deserved bronze medal, and a spot on the podium. As he looks ahead to Paris, this achievement grants him vital points towards his Olympic qualification.

In the Triathlon Challenge Peguera-Mallorca, athletes pushed their limits through the grueling three segments, including a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride, and a 21.1 km run. Germany's Frederic Funk delivered an impressive performance, finishing in 6th place.
