Exploration once carried with it a sense of the conquest of nature. But that has changed and the wardrobe of the modern adventurer takes a far more holistic approach. Today, we have the opportunity to reconnect with Nature, through a more sustainable model of growth - wherever possible - so that venturing to the ends of the earth does not contribute to the end of the Earth.

October 15th, 2020 – ZURICH, SWITZERLAND. How did we protect ourselves from weather conditions before we had membrane technologies and waterproof coatings?

Nature never stands still; and if you pay attention closely, it still has a lot to teach and tell us. Back in the days in our part of the world (the Alps), communities lived and worked the land despite unforgiving conditions. And they turned to nature build garments that withstood the elements.

“How do we create a garment that respects Nature and is imprint of Alpine tradition? How do we conserve the places we love to explore and ensure they are here for future generations of explorers to enjoy?” This was the starting point for the team at the On Lab in Zurich as they embarked on this special project. And for that, they had to make conscious use of natural and locally produced fabrics as well as techniques.

The result? The Swiss Legacy Jacket, an ultra-limited piece that is designed, sourced and crafted in our “backyard”.

Unisex and oversized with an A-line shape, the Swiss Legacy Jacket reflects the nature of modern-day Switzerland. Made of densely woven EtaProof® organic cotton, the jacket holds a unique combination of performance properties (comfort, durability and breathability). EtaProof® organic cotton is dynamic and adaptive as it swells when exposed to moisture and seals the fabric. This not only helps keep moisture out, but increases the insulation properties for added warmth when the weather gets wild.

And what about “not so sustainable” coatings and the fabric being water-repellent? Well, our teams observed nature for that. How do ducks, for instance, get out of the water and look completely dry? The answer is natural oils and our teams used an environmentally friendly coating called ecorepel® to consolidate that property.

The Swiss Legacy Jacket is set to release on October 15th, 2020 across a curated retail network as well as On’s website. An ultra-limited number of 600 pieces worldwide have been produced. Jackets will be numbered and will retail at EUR 789.95.
