Yared Nuguse defends his Zurich Diamond League Title
Zurich, Switzerland, September 5, 2024 - Bronze Olympic Medallist Yared Nuguse (USA) successfully defended his 1500m Diamond League Zurich title in the Swiss city, holding off rivals Kerr, Ingebrigtsen, and Olympic Champion Hocker.
In a near rematch of the Olympic final, eight of the 12 finalists in Paris were on the start line in Zurich. The four favorites all fell in line for the first 1100 meters as the two pacemakers guided the runners around the track at the Letzigrund Stadium.
With a lap to go, Ingebrigsten and OAC Team Member Nuguse found themselves with a slight lead on the field, with Kerr trying to bridge the gap between them and the chase group. As Ingebrigsten kicked for the home straight, Nuguse had no trouble following and, with just 50 meters to go, pulled ahead of the Norwegian and sealed the win in 3:29.21.
Nuguse, who has had a remarkable second season as a professional runner, highlighted by his Olympic Bronze Medal win, talked about the difference between this race and the Olympic final:
“It is definitely a lot less stressful. The Olympics were like a huge milestone and when you got over it, it just felt like fun racing. It was so much more fun running with these guys today.”
His title defense in Zurich marked Nuguses’ third Diamond League win, following his success in London and Zurich last year. He now has his eyes set on the Diamond League Season final, which is set to take place in Brussels, Belgium on the 13th and 14th of September.
Third Place for Gebreselama in 5000m
As Beatrice Chibet attempted to break the women’s 5000m world record, Tsigie Gebreselama (ETH) held her own, running a solid race and bringing home third place in a time of 14:39.05. While the race started together, it rapidly spread out as Chibet speared on with her record attempt, one that would not be successful. Gebreselama ran alone in third place for most of the 12 and a half laps. Her third place marked her second of the Diamond League season in 2024 after she had finished third in the 3000m race in Lausanne two weeks prior.
