World Athletics U20 Championship Triumphs, Record-Breaking Runs, and World-Leading Times
It was a weekend of celebrations for On athletes with U20 World Championship medals, world records, and world-leading performances.
Zurich, Switzerland, September 3, 2024 — The post-Olympic blues have been well and truly shaken off as On athletes continue to shine on the global stage, bringing home medals, shattering world records, and setting new world-leading times.
Triple Success at the World Athletics U20 Championships
Fresh off their Olympic debuts, Peyton Craig and Claudia Hollingsworth, who train with OAC Oceania and represent Australia, headed to Lima, Peru, for the U20 World Championships. Competing in the 800m finals on August 30th, both athletes delivered outstanding performances. Craig secured a silver medal with a time of 1:46.95, quickly followed by Hollingsworth, who also claimed silver with a time of 2:00.87.
Jolanda Kallabis (GER), the third On athlete in Lima, competed in the 1500m final on the last day of the championship. Overcoming injuries and a last-minute qualification, Kallabis exceeded expectations, earning a bronze medal—the first-ever for Germany in the 1500m at a U20 championship.
A New Road Mile World Record
On Sunday morning in Düsseldorf, Yared Nuguse (USA), fresh from winning bronze in the 1500m at the Olympics, aimed to break the road mile world record of 3:54.6 at the Kö Meile. Nuguse delivered an extraordinary performance, clocking in at 3:51.9—well under the previous record. However, Elliot Giles (GBR) ultimately claimed the world record and the win with a time of 3:51.3.
New World-Leading Time
At the ISTAF Berlin, On athletes, Gesa Krause (GER) and Olivia Gürth (GER) competed in the 2000m steeplechase on the iconic blue track. Just weeks after Gürth triumphed over Krause at the German National Championships in the 3000m steeplechase, Krause turned the tables in Berlin, winning with a new world-leading time of 5:56.71. Gürth followed closely with a personal best of 6:00.50, marking another stellar performance for the 22-year-old.
